Elected to the Texas Senate in 1998, Mike Jackson represents Senate District 11, which includes portions of Brazoria, Harris and Galveston Counties. He chairs the Senate Economic Development Committee and is a member of the Senate State Affairs, Business and Commerce, Natural Resources, and Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committees. Jackson is also a five-term veteran of the Texas House of Representatives where he represented District 129.

On May 30, 2011, Senator Jackson was elected by his fellow senators to serve as the 263rd president pro tempore of the Texas Senate. In the absence of Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst, the president pro tempore serves as the president of the senate. Senator Jackson will at times also be called upon to act as governor, when both Dewhurst and Governor Perry are out of state at the same time.

Since the end of the 82nd Regular Legislative Session and 1st Called Session, Mike has been named one of the 2011 "Champion of Small Business" award winners by the National Coalition for Capital (NCFC). The NCFC is a non-profit, nationwide coalition that advocates innovative access to capital policies that enable the growth of small businesses. He was also one of five Texas state senators to receive a 2011 "Taxpayer Advocate Award" from Texans For Fiscal Responsibility. The group presents this award to legislators in recognition of a "strong rating on the most recent Fiscal Responsibility Index."

In 2010, Senator Jackson was named "Citizen of the Year" by the Southbelt-Ellington Chamber of Commerce and was honored by Texans for Lawsuit Reform with the "TLR Civil Justice Leadership Award" for his support of a fair and predictable civil justice system in Texas.

For his conservative voting recording during the 81st Legislative Session, Senator Jackson was honored in 2009 by the Texans for Fiscal Responsibility with a "Taxpayer Advocate Award." The Associated Builders and Contractors of Texas recognized him for "actions above and beyond the call of duty," with an "ABC Free Enterprise Champion" award and the Texas Association of Business once again deemed Mike a "Champion of Free Enterprise," the group's highest legislative distinction.

A senate member who actively advocates on behalf of his coastal constituents, Senator Jackson was appointed by Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst to serve as a member of the Texas Windstorm Insurance Legislative Oversight Board. The board was created as part of a comprehensive bill that overhauled the state's windstorm insurance pool, which Mike sponsored in the senate in 2009.

The lieutenant governor chose Senator Jackson as a Texas representative to the Agriculture and Rural Development Committee of the Southern Legislative Conference as well as to another term on the Redistricting and Elections Committee and to a new position on the Environment Committee, both with the National Conference of State Legislatures. He was also appointed as Co-Chairman of the Texas Conservative Coalition's Task Force on Transportation.

Senator Jackson's earlier honors include the Texas Manufactured Housing Association's "Texas Affordable Housing Leadership Award;" the Texas Chemical Council's "Legislative Leadership Award;" and an appointment by Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst and House Speaker Tom Craddick to represent Texas on the Gulf Coast Marine Fisheries Commission, a position he still holds.

Mike has received the "Coastal Stewardship Award" from the General Land Office and the American Shore and Coastal Preservation Association in recognition of his beach conservation efforts. He was honored for his efforts to secure funding for an important beach restoration project benefiting Senate District 11 and particularly the tourism industry of Galveston Island. Senator Jackson was also declared a "Champion of Texas' Economy" by the Texans for Fiscal Responsibility and "Gulf Coast Area Statesman of the Year" by Vocational Guidance Services.

Prior to the 80th Legislative Session, Lieutenant Governor Dewhurst appointed Jackson Co-Chairman of a special Joint Select Committee on Windstorm Coverage and Budgetary Impact. The committee held hearings throughout the coastal region to gather information on reformation of the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association.

Senator Jackson was named a "Fighter for Free Enterprise" by the Texas Association of Business in 2003, 2005 and 2007 and received the Turf Irrigators Association's 2003 "Legislator of the Year Award." Also from the Texas Association of Business, he received an award for "maintaining a stellar pro-business, pro-Texas voting record during the 78th Legislative Session."

His other awards include the Texas Eagle Forum, "Freedom and Family Award;" the Texas Turf Irrigators Association "Legislator of the Year;" and the State of Texas Justices of the Peace and Constables' "Legislator of the Year."

During his tenure in the Texas House of Representatives, Jackson served as Vice-Chairman of the House Committee on Environmental Regulation and as a member of the House Committees on Land and Resource Management, Energy Resources, Business and Industry, Liquor Regulation, and Historical and Cultural Resources.

Mike is the president of Force Corporation, his family's La Porte-based industrial construction and maintenance company, and is a 35-year veteran of the construction industry. He and his wife Vickie reside in Shoreacres and have two adult children, Vic and Michelle. They are members of La Porte United Methodist Church.
